A recipient of any Title II Social Security benefit (including SSDI, survivors, and retirement) can receive the COVID-19 impact stimulus payment automatically, without having to register or file any tax returns, if otherwise eligible.
However, people who receive any of these benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should register at the IRS’s webpage at www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payments. For more information see SSA’s press release.
Additionally, any new beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, must go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter their information. All SSI recipients have to complete the IRS’s Non-Filers form found here. Any current claimant who is not receiving benefits and who has not filed a tax return in 2018 or 2019 must also complete the IRS non-filers form.
