Social Security Benefits & COVID-19 Stimulus Payment

A recipient of any Title II Social Security benefit (including SSDI, survivors, and retirement) can receive the COVID-19 impact stimulus payment automatically, without having to register or file any tax returns, if otherwise eligible.

However, people who receive any of these benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should register at the IRS’s webpage at For more information see SSA’s press release

Additionally, any new beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, must go to the IRS’s  Non-Filers website to enter their information. All SSI recipients have to complete the IRS’s Non-Filers form found here. Any current claimant who is not receiving benefits and who has not filed a tax return in 2018 or 2019 must also complete the IRS non-filers form.
